A Bangla accounting system for cooperative samities and microfinance groups: members, weekly savings, loans with service charge, the red-black collection sheet, daily cash and reports — on phone and laptop, with field collection that keeps working without internet.
Samity Khata replaces the paper books that cooperative samities in Bangladesh still run on: the black savings sheet, the red-black loan collection sheet where installments are written in black and the service charge in red, and the daily cash notebook. Field officers collect at weekly group meetings from their phones, branch managers close the day, and the president sees every branch in one place.
Collection keeps working without internet. Entries are stored on the phone and sent when a connection comes back, and every entry carries its own ID, so a retry can never book money twice. The same screens print as Bangla receipts and as sheets laid out like the paper ones, with the signature lines of the field officer, manager and president.
It is built as a multi-tenant SaaS: every samity is isolated from the others, and each one changes everything about itself from its own settings — name, logo and colours, numbering, how a payment is split between principal and service charge, loan products, income and expense heads, receipt layout, who may do what, and automatic backups.
Most samities keep their accounts in large paper sheets and a notebook. Mistakes in carrying balances forward, service charge mixed up with principal and missing branch reports are common, and field officers often collect where there is no internet. The software had to look and work like the books people already trust, run on cheap Android phones as well as an office laptop, and never lose or double a collection made offline.
We built a Laravel SaaS where a single ledger service is the only code that can move money, with rules it always enforces: no withdrawal above the savings balance, no collection above what is owed, nothing written into a closed day. Loan schedules are derived from each loan's own terms, and every payment is split into principal and service charge by replaying the loan's payments in date order, so a corrected entry re-splits everything after it. The phone screens queue collections in the browser and sync them with idempotent IDs, and a service worker keeps the field pages available offline.
